Trumper across the Tasman
– The 1914 Australian tour of New Zealand
Written with Peter Schofield, Trumper across the Tasman details the 16 matches the 1914 Australians played in New Zealand in 13 different cities and towns across New Zealand. Eight of the matches were first-class including two ‘Tests’.
This tour remains etched in the record books due to the world-record, eighth wicket partnership of 433 between Victor Trumper (293) and Arthur Sims (184 not out). More than 100 years later that record still stands.
The tour witnessed Trumper’s last innings in first class cricket. The 1914 New Zealand tour became Trumper’s grand farewell to cricket.
In his Foreword Gideon Haigh wrote, ‘a memento of the Golden Age’s last glimmering, and suitably handsome it is too … The feats of Trumper and his comrades would be, as it were, preserved in amber; now, praise be, they are chronicled between covers.’
Large format, hardback, extensively illustrated
